Updated: Nov 24

Vaginal Health

Consider diet and mental health for a healthy vagina. Stress significantly affects the vagina's ability to maintain a healthy balance and function properly.

Maintaining a nutritious diet, wearing cotton underwear, avoiding soaps, and not using perfumes in the area are effective practices for keeping the vagina healthy. Personal hygiene is a form of self-care and essential for a healthy and happy lifestyle.

Having a healthy vagina is a delicate yet important issue for all women. We all care about our intimate areas.

The rise in vaginal odor, abrasions, and bacterial infections prompts the question of how to avoid becoming a statistic. Fortunately, there are simple lifestyle changes you can make. Below are some easy steps you can start today to feel fresh and clean, without embarrassment or doubt.

  • Vaginas have their own pH scale, and disturbances in pH levels can lead to various diseases. Water is the best sanitation method for vaginas, keeping the surrounding skin fresh and preventing itching or darkening. Avoid keeping the surrounding skin fresh to prevent itching or darkening. Some simple remedies for maintaining vaginal sanitation include;

Cotton underwear

Vaginal infections often cause itchy skin and uncomfortable underwear. It can lead to vaginal odor, excessive discharge, or reddened skin. Cotton is one of the softest materials available for women. Cotton underwear absorbs moisture, and its tiny pores allow the vagina to breathe and air to circulate, preventing bacterial infections. It acts as a ventilator for the vagina.

Avoid using soaps

The competitive market has introduced various scented soaps, perfumes, and creams for vaginal care. The main issue with using soaps in the intimate area is the risk of increasing the skin's pH level. Our body maintains a natural pH scale, and soaps or scented creams disrupt this balance, making the vagina prone to infections and diseases. People often apply soaps to the vagina, thinking it kills germs, but it can cause itchiness or skin darkening. It may also lead to dryness near the vulva, resulting in scrapes and bruising. Water is the only substance that should directly contact the vagina. Any other product should be approved by your doctor or healthcare provider before use.

Latex and polyester underwear restrict the body and hinder circulation, increasing yeast infections. Cotton is one of the few materials that can be easily sterilized after use. Avoid wearing thongs or lacy panties for extended periods as they may irritate the skin. Doctors often suggest that when at home, women should wear cotton boxers to allow the vagina to breathe and maintain the skin's pH balance.

A healthy diet for a healthy vagina

Our daily dietary habits significantly contribute to a healthy body and, consequently, a healthy vagina. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides the body with nutrients and minerals that support health. Doctors especially recommend a diet high in liquids for a strong vagina. Cranberry juice is essential in every woman's diet as it helps reduce and treat yeast-caused infections. Yogurt contains lactobacillus bacteria, which help combat harmful vaginal bacteria and maintain the pH balance. A supplement containing lactobacillus acidophilus may be needed to normalize flora after vaginitis or antibiotic treatments. Some food products to include in the diet for a healthy vagina are;

  • Probiotics are an excellent addition to one’s diet.

  • Lemon water helps restore the body's pH balance.

  • Garlic combats vaginal discharge and burning itchiness.

  • Green vegetables like kale enhance blood circulation to the vagina. They can be consumed as salad or juice. Cabbage and celery are also good nutrient sources.

  • Flax seeds help manage hormonal issues, combating dryness and burning. Staying hydrated is essential when consuming flax seeds.

  • Avocado promotes vaginal health, keeping it lubricated. The potassium and healthy fats in avocado strengthen vaginal cells.

  • Adopt a plant-based diet free of processed foods, sugar, and fried or greasy foods.

Vinegar

Vinegar serves as a strong antibiotic due to its acidic properties, making it useful when the pH level is excessively basic. It effectively eliminates bacteria and viruses in the vagina, thereby lowering the risk of infection. Proper cleansing is essential after intercourse to prevent serious infections from other bodily fluids around the genitals. In these situations, diluted vinegar can be an effective remedy for vaginal issues. It is important to ensure that vinegar is never applied directly to the body but rather diluted in bath water.

Soaking in a vinegar-infused bath aids the body in achieving a balanced state. It's important to understand that while moderate use can help prevent vaginal issues, this remedy might not be effective for everyone. Consulting a doctor is always recommended for cases of infections, odour, or heavy discharge.

To alleviate vaginal itching, combine angelica and alfalfa (pulverize in a seed mill or blender if not in powder form) with glycerin from the pharmacy, and apply topically. Damiana tea is effective for dryness and itching. Consume one cup four times daily.

For itching around the vagina, use a perineal pour – one quart of hot or cold water into which you put one to four tablespoons of vinegar, poured slowly through the low part of the pubic hair, and encouraged with the fingers to touch all parts of the vulva by opening all the folds. The perineal pour should be done with every bathroom use.

Also, puncture a vitamin E or vitamin A capsule and insert it high as a suppository in the vagina each night for dryness of the vagina. The vitamin A or E suppositories have to be used daily for six weeks to get relief. In six weeks, drop back to about once or twice a week. Itching can also be helped by vitamin E oil rubbed on the vulva.

Vaginal Itching – Wash: Mix: 4 cups of hot or cold water, 1 to 4 tablespoons of vinegar. Pour slowly through the low part of the pubic hair and encourage the fingers to touch all aspects of the vulva by opening all the folds. This should be done with every bathroom use. Vaginal Itching can also be helped by vitamin E oil rubbed on the vulva.

Vaginal dryness – Suppository: Puncture a Vitamin E or Vitamin A capsule; Insert it high as a suppository in the vagina each night for dryness of the vagina. Use daily for six weeks to get relief. After six weeks, drop back to about 1 or 2 a week. Before intercourse, increase vaginal lubrication using lubricant gels. If possible, maintain sexual activity. This will keep your vagina in the best possible condition.

Vagina Care: Always wash hands before handling the vagina. Use hands to clean the area thoroughly. Use plain, clear water to rinse the area meticulously. Be gentle and use no abrasive cloths; dry off the non-hairy portions by blotting rather than rubbing. Never use soaps on the genital area; Douching is discouraged.

To maintain vaginal pH: 2 tablespoons of vinegar (or more) in 4 cups of water, pour over the vulva each morning after the shower.

These remedies assist in preventing infections from developing at their source. It's important to recognize that regular care and simple hygienic practices not only protect us from pain, discomfort, and recurring bodily disorders but also reduce the likelihood of urinary infections. Maintaining vaginal health should be an integral part of everyone's daily routine for a healthy lifestyle.
